The European Union (EU) is a major producer of rapeseed and sunflower seeds, holding a 29% and 21% share in global production respectively. However, the production of other oilseeds such as soybeans accounts for less than 1% of the EU's harvest. The main producers and processors of rape are Poland, France, Germany, and the UK, while Romania, France, Bulgaria, Spain, and Hungary lead in sunflower seed production. The EU's oilseed production has seen dynamic growth since the start of the 21st century, driven by increasing demand for vegetable oils in the industrial sector. Despite this growth, the EU still relies on imports to meet its needs, particularly soybean oilseeds and palm oil. Poland has emerged as a significant exporter of rapeseed and rapeseed oil since joining the EU, due to its large-scale cultivation and processing of the crop.
