Spain's sector council of Oil of Agro-food Cooperatives is projecting a 40% decrease in olive oil production for the 2022/2023 harvest, bringing the total to 900,000 tons due to potential drought and high temperatures. Despite this, sales have hit an record-breaking 1.5 million tons. The rising costs of energy and inputs are expected to further decrease production and increase unit costs. The sector is also grappling with economic losses from pomace extraction plants due to energy cost increases, and has opposed the Nutriscore front labeling system, deeming it subjective and uninformative.
