The interprofessional association Ailimpo has reported a significant increase in the ecological cultivation of lemon and grapefruit in Spain, with the area under organic lemon cultivation growing by 503% since 2012 to 10,300 hectares in 2021, and organic grapefruit cultivation increasing by 327% to 563 hectares during the same period. The Region of Murcia, Andalusia, and the Valencian Community are the primary regions for the production of these organic citrus fruits. In line with the European Union's push for more organic food production, the Green Deal's Farm to Table strategy aims to have 25% of agricultural land under organic production by 2030.
