Bangladeshi tomato producers are facing losses due to an oversupply in the local markets, leading to rock-bottom prices of Tk 2 per kg ($0.02). This is in contrast to the retail price of Tk 30 per kg ($0.28). The situation arises due to inefficient systems and uniform planting patterns in the southwest Khulna division. Producers are struggling to cover transport and input costs, and in some cases, they are giving away the tomatoes for free and using some for cattle feed. Local experts recommend that producers diversify their crops to prevent such oversupply and financial losses.
