For many years, the peanuts were left to drift on their own. Support for them as pulses is minimal and imports, mainly from China and Argentina, are suffocating. In 1990, we had 200,000 decares, with 65% of the plantings in the EU and 85% of the yields coming from Bulgaria and mainly from the Sadovo region. Last year, the areas were reduced to only 7,000 decares, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture. And while in our country production is based on a handful of producers, foreigners are opening their doors wide specifically to Bulgarian varieties. In Italy alone, 3,000 decares have been sown with the Lotus variety. It is also being tested in Spain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Greece.
