Between January and October 2024, Peruvian exports of cocoa and derivatives surpassed US$ 1 billion, a significant increase from the US$ 16 million exported in 2000. The majority of the exports were cocoa beans, while nearly US$ 400 million were value-added products. This growth is largely due to the expansion of cocoa plantations from 10,000 hectares in 2000 to over 230,000 hectares today, and the successful implementation of alternative development programs. The sector employs around 100,000 producers and has an annual processing capacity of 86,000 tons of cocoa beans. Despite these achievements, small farmers need more support in technical assistance, credit, and access to new markets.
