Pineapple prices have significantly dropped, causing market difficulties for growers in Myanmar, particularly in regions such as Pyin Oo Lwin and Shan State. The 2021 pineapple market is not bringing good profits, with prices plummeting from 300 kyats last year to below 100 kyats this year. The decline in prices is attributed to a decrease in demand due to COVID-19 restrictions and traffic limitations, resulting in higher delivery costs. As a result, pineapples now account for only 15% of store sales, with the rest being sold to theaters at prices only 30% of the previous season. Some commercial growers have not been paid for picking pineapples due to the poor market, leading to significant losses and the halt of harvesting in some areas.
