In February 2023, Ukraine saw a significant decrease in the import of fresh, chilled, and frozen pork, with figures dropping by 2.6 times to 743 tons, or $1.5 million, marking the lowest level for February since 2018. This decline, which is part of a larger 4.6-fold decrease since the beginning of the year, is primarily due to increased meat prices in Europe. Since the onset of the war, pig prices have risen by one and a half times, despite a surplus in the market. The average price of imported pork in February was $2 per kilogram, in contrast to the record high price of European pork, which reached 2.28 euros or $2.42 per kilogram. The majority of Ukraine's pork imports come from EU countries, and analysts anticipate an increase in supplies once prices stabilize, although meat supplies are expected to remain low in the short term due to the high cost of importing goods from other countries. Additionally, meat production in Ukraine saw a decline of nearly 20% in 2022.
