In the first half of 2021, Portugal experienced a 2.2% decrease in pig output for slaughter, with the number of pigs reducing to 278,537 from the previous year. Despite this, the country saw a significant 33.6% increase in meat exports, totaling 31,226.4 tons in the first half of 2021. This increase was largely due to a 70.8% rise in frozen meat exports and a 22.6% rise in fresh and refrigerated meat exports. However, offal sales did not share the same success, with a 25.9% decrease during the same period. As a result, the total turnover of sales abroad increased by 13.5% to 99,811.1 million euros.
