Uzbekistan is experiencing a significant increase in greenhouse tomato prices, with wholesale prices rising by an average of one and a half times over the past month and nearly 70% since the start of the year due to crop losses from abnormal cold in January. The average loss of tomato crops is estimated to be between 50% and 70%, with the most significant losses in regions such as Surkhandarya, Kashkadarya, Samarkand and Tashkent, and the Ferghana Valley. The growing season of tomatoes and the lack of natural gas leading to decreased gas pressure in greenhouse complexes are contributing to the expected sustained increase in prices. This price hike is also impacting Uzbekistan's tomato exports, which have seen a 36% decrease in the first decade of March 2023 compared to the same period last year.
