The Association of Olive Oil Producers of Beira Interior (APABI) has introduced the Galician Olive from Beira Baixa PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) to safeguard the traditional Galega olive variety in Portugal. Despite its low productivity and vulnerability to pests, the Galega olive is celebrated for its exceptional oil quality. The PGI status, obtained through extensive research, aims to boost local olive growers' income, prevent the neglect of traditional olive groves, and encourage new plantations. The Azeitona Galega da Beira Baixa PGI, a table olive preserved traditionally, is now available in Continente supermarkets.
