The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has designated the 'red-footed horse dung crab' as the marine creature of the month for June, highlighting its unique red color and distinctive horse dung smell. This crab, found in the Pacific and Indian Ocean coasts including Korea, Southeast Asia, and Australia, plays a crucial role in sea cleaning as an omnivore. However, its numbers have dwindled due to coastal development and environmental pollution, leading to its protection since 2007. In 2017, the Ministry successfully bred the crab and released about 1,000 into the Changwon Bongam Tidal Flat. The manual for its breeding has been distributed to relevant organizations to aid in population recovery. Unauthorized collection or distribution of marine protected creatures, including the red-footed dung crab, is illegal, with potential penalties including up to three years in prison or a fine of up to 30 million won.
