According to the European Commission's (EC) forecast, cited by Oleoscope, sunflower seed production in the EU-27 during the 2025/26 marketing year will increase by 17 percent compared to last year – to 9.7 million tons. According to the German Association of Grain and Oilseed Processors (UFOP), the total increase in sunflower seed supply in the EU-27 is entirely due to the expected increase in the average yield of the oilseed crop by 21% (to around 2.1 t/ha, as the cultivated area in the EU has decreased by 4% to 4.6 million hectares). The EC predicts that in the new season, Romania will regain its position as the leader in sunflower production in the EU, with the new Romanian harvest estimated at 2.2 million tons, 50% more compared to 2024/25.
