The South African Canegrowers Association welcomes the disbursement of R225-million to black and small-scale cane growers by the South African Sugar Association, as part of the Sugar Cane Value Chain Masterplan. The funding, which covers 64% of the costs, will be allocated across two grower support programs, with a focus on small-scale growers, including those on communal and freehold land delivering less than 1,800 t/y of cane. This comes as small-scale growers face challenges such as cane arson, Covid-19 costs, the Health Promotion Levy, decreased milling capacity, and increased input costs.
