Mexico's Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) has declared December 16 as the National Day of Vanilla, a celebration of the orchid's cultural significance and Mexico's global leadership in its production. The decree, published in the Official Journal of the Federation, aims to promote activities related to the vanilla product system and highlight Mexico's natural and cultural wealth. Mexico has been producing vanilla, also known as the black flower (Xahanat) to the Totonacs, for nearly 300 years and currently meets 100% of the domestic demand. The country also has potential to increase its international presence with the quality 'Vanilla de Papantla' product from Veracruz, Puebla, Oaxaca, and San Luis Potosí.
