Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, in South Korea, has become the first recipient of international certification from the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) for its oyster varieties. The certification signifies that the oysters are farmed sustainably. The representative product, '1004 Oyster', is produced using an environmentally friendly method that respects the natural growth cycle of the oysters, ensuring high quality and safety. Produced by four farms in Jaeun-myeon, the oysters have generated 100 million won in income from domestic fine dining restaurants and hotels, and are in talks for export to Hong Kong and other countries.
