The 2023 apple and pear harvest in South Africa is underway, with growers anticipating a slight decrease in exports compared to the previous season due to hail in November and December in Ceres and Langkloof. Despite this setback, the rain during the same period allowed for sufficient irrigation water. Apples are expected to see a 1% drop in exports, while pears are predicted to decrease by 3%. However, late season apple varieties like Cripps Pink/Pink Lady® and Cripps Red/Joya® are expected to increase by 2% and 7% respectively, due to the introduction of new varieties with higher yields. Pears are projected to yield around 4 million cartons, with Forelle and Packhams Triumph volumes remaining steady, while summer pears such as Cheeky, Celina and Rosemarie are expected to see a slight increase.
