Spain is a major producer of fish and aquaculture species, with over 327,000 tons produced in 2021. The country has a variety of aquaculture operations, including marine, freshwater, and coastal, which use the natural environment to breed high-quality fish. Aquaculture facilities now have advanced technologies that allow for real-time monitoring of water conditions and tracking of each item from birth to sale. Additionally, the aquaculture industry has a smaller carbon footprint compared to other food industries and contributes significantly to the national economy, supporting around 55,000 jobs and providing an annual economic contribution of approximately 500 million euros.
