Van Ooijen Citrus, a Dutch company primarily known for cherries, is set to import its first batch of Spanish greenhouse cherries, with a total of 12 cassettes weighing 1.5 kilograms each, priced at 75 euros per kilogram. This initiative aims to bridge the market gap during a period of global cherry scarcity following the early conclusion of the southern hemisphere's cherry season. Despite the high price, which includes a transport cost of 20 euros per kilogram, the company sells these cherries by prior request and by the kilo, not aiming for profit. Lucien Reuter, a company representative, expressed skepticism about the potential market growth for greenhouse cherries in Spain, citing high costs and weather-related risks such as frost and hail.
