The Pará State Department of Environment and Sustainability (Semas) has introduced new regulations to streamline environmental licensing and boost the local bioeconomy, with a focus on honey production from native stingless bees. This initiative, aimed at simplifying the process and encouraging the preservation of these bees, allows meliponiculturists to sell hives, products, and byproducts. The regulation also highlights the role of small producers in the honey production chain and promises to increase the added value of their products. The regulations were developed in a collaborative effort with beekeepers and other stakeholders, aiming to enhance food production, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. The new regulations are expected to enhance the bioeconomy by enabling certification of origin, adding value, expanding markets, and ensuring commercial regularity for small and medium producers.
