In its first forecasts for the 2023/2024 season, Strategie Grains estimated the sown area of soft wheat in the EU at 21.67 million hectares, down from 21.78 million hectares last year, but slightly above the average of five years old. For barley, it predicted a total area (winter + spring) in the EU at 10.38 million hectares, up from 10.34 million in 2022/23. “Wheat and barley winter plantings are doing well in most of the EU-27, although there are problems in Spain, Bulgaria and Romania with lack of rain,” he said.
