Wholesale prices for tomatoes in Georgia have experienced a significant increase, reaching GEL2.20/kg ($0.85/kg) on July 21, 2023, compared to GEL1.20/kg ($0.47/kg) a week earlier. The price increase is attributed to the transition period when supplies from local high tunnels are switched to open field tomatoes, resulting in declining stocks and rising prices. The demand for tomatoes is fueled by the influx of Russian citizens into Georgia and the economic recovery from the Covid pandemic, while the country's total tomato production in 2022 was the lowest in seven years due to weather conditions, rising costs, and farmer shifts to other crops.
