Dagestan, Russia is expanding its hazelnut garden, with plans to increase the area of the largest garden to 1,000 hectares this year. The expansion includes planting new seedlings on 400 hectares in the fall, with other farms in the region also planning to increase their hazelnut orchard areas. The deputy minister of agriculture expects Dagestan to compete with hazelnut importers to the Russian market as the young orchards begin to bear fruit. The hazelnut garden laying in Dagestan began in the fall of 2019 and is expected to commission 2.5 thousand hectares of irrigated land, with investments estimated at around 750 million rubles.
