Spain is experiencing a resurgence of the blue tongue disease in regions such as the Balearic Islands and Extremadura, which have not seen the disease in nearly 20 and 5 years respectively. In Extremadura, two outbreaks of serotype 4 blue tongue have been confirmed in Jerez de los Caballeros and Montemolín, affecting 137 cattle and 1,200 sheep. The source of the outbreak is believed to be from neighboring Andalusia and Portugal. Following the declaration of similar outbreaks in Huelva and Seville, Spain's Ministry of Agriculture has updated the bluetongue restriction zones, including Jerez de los Caballeros, and has implemented compulsory vaccination in the area.
