The European Commission (EC) has called for the adaptation of the European wine sector to address structural issues, new consumption trends, and the impacts of climate change and pests. The EC's Agriculture and Rural Development delegation, Pierre Bascou, highlighted the decline in wine consumption due to various factors, including import tariffs, the COVID-19 pandemic, and global instability. The loss of purchasing power of consumers and the vulnerability of markets to climate change have also been noted. The high production and distribution costs in the sector and the need for balanced prices were also discussed. This precedes the first meeting of a high-level group on wine policy, to be held next Wednesday.
