Written by Dina Khaled: The prices of prickly pears, nicknamed “the fruit of the poor,” jumped in the Egyptian and Moroccan markets, as the price of one prickly pear fruit jumped to between 5 and 10 dirhams, and it also jumped in the local market to reach 5 pounds per pill. Hatem Al-Naguib, Vice President of the Vegetables and Fruits Division at the Cairo Chamber of Commerce, told Masrawy that prickly pear prices are high this year compared to last season’s prices. Al-Naguib added that the wholesale price of a prickly pear “cage” ranges between 70 and 100 pounds, compared to 50 pounds last year.
