The Italians applied for kumquat developed in Turkey

The project "Development of Kumquat (Fortunellamargarita) Through Mutation Breeding" was prepared in 2012 at Alata Horticultural Research Institute in Erdemli district of Mersin, affiliated to the General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The breeding work of kumquat, which started in 2012, was determined by the institute and ended with development work. In the first stage, a variety with high eating quality, suitable for making jam, in the second stage, an ornamental plant with more fruit was developed in the third stage. The approval process was initiated by applying to the Central Directorate of Seed Registration and Certification for 2 types of candidates whose characteristics were developed.On the other hand, it was stated that a grown tree yields up to 20 kilograms and the price of a kilogram is sold in the domestic market between 20-25 TL and provides significant economic gain.
