In the first half of the year, production of native starches (corn, wheat, and potato) amounted to approximately 208.5 thousand tons—1.5% more than in the same period last year, reports "Interfax" citing the Association of Deep Processing Enterprises of Grain (Sovzemkrakhmal). The positive trend was driven by a 5% increase in corn starch production to 180.54 thousand tons, while wheat starch production decreased by 22% to 18.6 thousand tons, and potato starch increased by 1% to 6.3 thousand tons. Production of modified starches of all types—both in the food and industrial segments—decreased by 12% to 56.2 thousand tons. The industry union attributes the decline in industrial starch production to a drop in demand from consumer industries such as the oil and gas industry. The volume of food modifications production is linked to the shortage of waxy corn starch and, as a result, its replacement with native corn and wheat starch.
