The Egyptian Commercial Office in Ottawa has successfully negotiated the reopening of the Canadian market to fresh Egyptian strawberry exports, following the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's conditional approval. This approval is based on the requirement that Canadian importers secure a specific import permit and that the strawberries are subjected to agricultural quarantine in Egypt to ensure they are free from pests. The Minister of Trade and Industry and Trade Commissioner Yahya Al-Wathiq Billah emphasized that these exports must adhere to general import requirements, including commercial production standards, obtaining a phytosanitary certificate, and passing a trial period where 100% of the shipments will be inspected upon arrival in Canada. This trial period is designed to confirm the strawberries' compliance with Canadian phytosanitary standards, leading to a phase where an import permit will not be necessary, and standard inspection rates will be reinstated.
