The Ministry of Agriculture in Russia is contemplating the introduction of import quotas on foreign-bred seeds for potatoes, sugar beets, and rapeseed, as a means to limit imports from 'unfriendly' countries such as Germany, the USA, and France. Oksana Lut, the ministry head, highlighted the rising prices from these suppliers and anticipated that transitioning to domestic breeding could halve seed costs. Despite the historical purchases of imported seeds, particularly for corn and sunflower, Lut confirmed that Russian farmers will have all necessary seed material for the upcoming year. The total quota for importing foreign-bred seeds last year was 34 thousand tons, primarily for potato seeds.
