Hungarian families are facing a dilemma as Easter approaches due to falling real wages and rising food prices, with general food inflation in Hungary reaching over 40 percent in the last five months. Despite the economic strain, the Association of Hungarian Butchers assures that Easter ham will be available, albeit at significantly higher prices. The cost of ham products is expected to increase by 35-40 percent compared to last year. The rise in food prices is attributed to the war in Ukraine, which has caused a drastic increase in grain prices, affecting the meat industry. The meat industry is further challenged by oversupply and decreased demand, leading to a complex situation where input costs have risen, but consumer prices have not fully reflected these increases.
