The Strawberry Contact Group, consisting of France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, convened in Portugal to review the current strawberry campaign's status. Spain reported a 10% drop in exports and a 3% decrease in planted areas due to weather challenges, while France faced production issues and rising costs, yet kept plantation areas stable. Italy enjoyed a successful campaign with high market prices, though it expects a slight reduction in future planting areas. Portugal, on the other hand, reported an increase in raspberry production but struggles with strawberry cultivation, relying on imports to satisfy demand. The group emphasized the need for diversification into other red fruits, the adoption of agriculture 4.0 technologies, investment in genetic research for crop resilience, the necessity for EU support in market access, and the establishment of a European Zonal Registry for Phytosanitary Products to facilitate registration processes.
