Tomato price is rising in Belgium, but cannot yet match normal

The tomato price has now found its way up on the VBT clock, but with average kilo prices of just over 1 euro, the prices are still below the five-year average. One kilo of vine tomatoes yielded an average of more than 1.14 euros in week 50 and one kilo of loose tomatoes 1.08 euros, according to an overview of figures from the Association of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives. For the past two years, prices in week 50 have also been higher. The volumes for vine tomatoes are higher than last year. This may be explained by the fact that slightly more autumn tomatoes are being grown in order to make the gap slightly shorter due to the disappearance of the real illuminated winter crop. The volumes supplied with loose tomatoes are lower than in the past two years. Compared to 2020, the volume this year is 47% lower.
