A study conducted by the Mediterranean Fisheries Institute since 2018, as part of the BAYOMA project, has found that lionfish, an invasive species originating from the Indian Ocean, poses a significant ecological threat by consuming the young of all species in its habitat. To control its spread and reduce ecosystem pressure, the project suggests consuming lionfish meat, which is rich in protein. The institute aims to sell lionfish in markets and restaurants to generate economic benefits. The institute has also confirmed that lionfish meat is safe to eat if the poisonous spines are removed.
