Tunisian farmers and date producers are facing a crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The disease has led to low prices, reduced demand, and difficulties in exports, particularly in the southern regions of Kébili and Tozeur. This crisis comes amidst existing challenges such as high production costs, water scarcity, manpower shortages, and the lack of a compensation fund. As a result, farmers are unable to sell their date production and are experiencing severe financial difficulties. Thousands of tons of unsold dates have been stored in regional refrigerators, and the situation is expected to worsen with the addition of new crops to the already saturated market.
