The Ministry of Agriculture in Uganda, with funding from the Islamic Development Bank, is constructing the Igogero-Naigombwa irrigation scheme in Bugiri and Bugweri Districts. The project aims to help 9,000 small-scale rice farming households increase rice production and address issues of unpredictable water supply and floods. The scheme will include two multipurpose dams and a canal network for year-round water availability. The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Pearl Rice Company Ltd and Busowa Traders and Farmers' Cooperative Society Ltd, who will be the main off-takers of the rice produced. The government also assures farmers who have been surviving on the swamp that they will be compensated to ensure they secure alternative areas for agricultural practices.
