Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, announced that the state has reached a milestone by making sugarcane payments worth over Rs 2 lakh crore to farmers via DBT, a first in the country's history. This achievement, made within six years of his government's tenure, was highlighted by sugar industry and cane development minister, Chaudhary Laxmi Narayan. Narayan mentioned that out of the total dues of Rs 2.03 lakh crore for the current season, Rs 65 crore was transferred to farmers on Monday, with the remaining dues of Rs 3,000 - 4,000 crore yet to be paid. Additionally, the state is now the largest ethanol producer in the country, with sugar mills producing ethanol to be used as alternative fuel, aiming to increase farmers' income. However, Bhartiya Kisan Union leader, Alok Verma, pointed out that not all mills are complying with the rule of paying farmers within 14 days of receiving their cane.
