The US Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has reported a decrease in the United States cattle inventory as of January 1, 2023, with a total of 89.3 million head of cattle and calves. The inventory includes 38.3 million cows and heifers that have calved, with 28.9 million beef cows and 9.40 million dairy cows. The calf crop was estimated at 34.5 million, marking a 2% decrease from 2021. All feed cattle were at 14.2 million, a 4% decrease from 2022. This is expected to result in a decrease in meat production, potentially leading to price increases in the next 3-4 years. In contrast, US milk production is on the rise, with average daily deliveries in November 3.5 million liters higher than the previous year.
