Brazilian agricultural research corporation, Embrapa, has expanded its collection of Brazilian vanilla species from 70 to 130 specimens, gathered from expeditions across the Cerrado, the Atlantic Forest, and the Amazon. The project aims to identify plants with agronomic potential to support the domestication of vanilla in Brazil and assist in species preservation. Despite the challenges of collecting genetic material from vast natural areas, the project was successful due to support from various institutions and local collectors. The collected specimens will be incorporated into the Embrapa Vanilla Germplasm Bank, which aims to preserve biodiversity.
