The Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA) has held a protest outside the Dáil, calling on the government to support the ailing sheep sector or face its closure. ICSA President, Dermot Kelleher, highlighted Brexit-related challenges such as increased import costs and higher expenses on fertiliser and feed, which have led to significant financial losses for sheep farmers. The association is advocating for the Brexit Adjustment Reserve (BAR) to be allocated to the sector and a substantial increase in funding for the Sheep Improvement Scheme. They are also demanding fair prices from processors to ensure the sustainability of sheep farming.
