The Welsh government has acknowledged the need for a national strategy to eradicate Bovine Virus Diarrhoea (BVD) and is planning a Wales-wide legislative approach. This follows the end of the Gwaredu BVD scheme, which screened over 83% of cattle herds and identified more than 1,000 Persistently Infected animals. The Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW) has urged for a swift transition to legislation to avoid losing the progress made under the voluntary scheme. The FUW also expressed concerns about a potential drop in annual screens during the transition period and highlighted that over 90% of respondents to the Welsh government's consultation on introducing a BVD Eradication Scheme agreed with the need for legislation.
