Australian Avocado Growers Have Made Significant Progress Towards Accessing the Chinese Market

Australian avocado growers have made significant progress towards accessing the Chinese market. Avocados Australia recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the China Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Association (CIQA) in Beijing. This agreement is a crucial step forward in facilitating the export of Australian avocados to China. In 2022, Australia witnessed a significant surge in avocado production to 122 thousand metric tons (mt), marking a remarkable 52.5% increase from the previous year. Projections indicate that the production volume should surpass 170 thousand mt by 2026. This abundance has led to an oversupply in Australia’s domestic market, prompting the industry to explore opportunities for expansion into overseas markets actively.

Kenya’s AFA Set a Temporary Ban on Avocado Shipments

As of October 31, the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) in Kenya has set a temporary ban on avocado shipments due to concerns regarding the quality of the produce for both domestic and international markets. Furthermore, the AFA tightened regulations for mango exporters on November 13 to verify the authenticity of mango exports, as some exporters are blending avocados with mangoes for sea shipments. Under the new regulations, growers must request physical inspections for shipments destined for export. They can initiate this process by submitting a written request to the AFA, clearly stating the location of the packing station. These measures are expected to enhance the country's competitiveness in the global avocado export markets.
