Overall Peruvian Strawberry Exports Increase 30% YoY

From Jan-23 to Oct-23, Peru exported 24.3 thousand metric tons (mt) of strawberries, with an export value of USD 41 million. This is a significant increase of 30% in volume and 17% in value compared to the same period in 2022. Despite the rise in export value and volume, the average export prices dropped 10% year-over-year (YoY) due to the higher yields and intense competition at the beginning of the year. However, in Sep-23 and Oct-23, the average price per kilogram (kg) stood at USD 1.86/kg, increasing by 16% compared to the start of the season, attributed to the irregular campaigns at the international level, which created opportunities for Peruvian strawberries in major markets globally.

However, Peruvian strawberry exports to the United States (US) dropped by over 13% year-on-year (YoY) due to commercial decisions, as exporters found better prices in other markets. In addition, the shipment delay caused by Hurricane Otis made it less competitive in the US market. This situation will not improve in the coming months because of the arrival of goods in the US from other significant campaigns.

Strawberry Harvests in Mexico Experience Lower Volumes Due to Cold Weather

The strawberry harvests in Michoacán, Mexico, , and Jalisco are experiencing lower volumes than anticipated due to cold weather in key production areas. Free-On-Board (FOB) prices in McAllen for Michoacán and Jalisco strawberries range from USD 26 to 29 for 8x1 pound boxes. The volumes available at major distributors need to be increased to meet the demand. Sales activities during W47 were below average, attributed to the Thanksgiving holiday. The harvest is expected to increase gradually, but prices are anticipated to remain high.

Egyptian Strawberry Exporters Face Quality Issues Due to Early Shipments

Due to the early shipment of strawberries to Gulf countries, Egyptian strawberry exporters face quality issues, including coloration and small sizes. Negative feedback has been received from destination countries, prompting exporters to achieve proper coloration and sizing before exporting.

Vietnamese Market Embraces Premium Strawberry Varieties

The Vietnamese market commenced its fresh strawberry season from mid-Nov-23 to Apr-24. Korean strawberries have been the dominant choice for Vietnamese consumers, representing 70% of the market’s volume and 80% of its value. However, local strawberry growers and producers introduced premium varieties from Japan, New Zealand, and Korea to cater to the diverse preferences of local consumers and gain a larger market share. These premium strawberries, grown mainly in the highlands of Mộc Châu and Lâm Đồng provinces, have gained popularity among retailers since 2022 and are expected to see increased demand in the 2023/24 season.
