Global: Meat Trade Will Fall This Year According to FAO
The international meat trade could close 2022 with a slight contraction of 0.8% compared to the records corresponding to the previous year, with which 42 million tons of pork, bovine, poultry and sheep products would be mobilised. In the case of chicken meat, the international organisation predicted that 16.2MT will be sold globally, which would reflect a growth of 2.8%.
Netherlands: Bird Flu Was Detected in Oostrum
In Oostrum in the Limburg municipality of Venray, bird flu has been diagnosed on a poultry farm with laying hens. To prevent the virus from spreading, the approximately 223,000 animals at the location are being culled by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). There are no other poultry farms within a 1-km zone. Within 3 km there are six other poultry farms. These companies are screened for bird flu by the NVWA. There are 43 other poultry farms in the 10-km zone. The transport ban applies immediately in this area. A small part of the area is in Germany. The surveillance zone in the 10 km area has been coordinated with the German authorities.
Netherland: Judge Sees Catching Chickens by the Legs as a Violation of European Law
Minister Adema of LNV must take enforcement action against poultry service companies that hold the animals by the legs when catching chickens or broilers that go to the slaughterhouse. This was determined by the District Court of Rotterdam on Thursday 24 November in a case brought by Wakker Dier. Last year, the NVWA decided to enforce against catching chickens by their feet, after Wakker Dier submitted a request to this effect. Three catching companies were fined. However, the Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality reversed the imposed fines. The companies received a warning and catching by the legs was tolerated. The minister referred to a letter from the European Commission. The European Commission suggested that the ban on catching chickens by the legs was inadvertently included in European law. The minister also stated that the trapping method is used throughout Europe. The judge does not agree with this and rules that lifting chickens by the legs is a violation of the law that must be enforced in an 'effective way'.
France: Elimination of Male Chicks in the Laying Hen Sector Completed
Nearly 50 million male chicks are killed each year in the French egg industry. From 1 January 2023, in accordance with the commitments made, male chicks of breeds intended for the production of eggs in shells will no longer be eliminated. The end of grinding male chicks is materialising due to state support for innovation in hatcheries and solidarity in funding. Since the decree was published, the ministry has worked with the CNPO to identify and implement technical and financial solutions to support professionals in this important change. The hatcheries have thus made significant investments in record time and the installation of the necessary equipment is nearing completion. This major change will entail annual costs for the French egg sector estimated at €50 million.
US: Chicken Pulls October Poultry Production Higher
U.S. poultry production was up in October. The USDA says 4.592 billion pounds of poultry were certified as wholesome, up 5% on the year, including a 6% increase in chicken to 4.113 billion pounds, which cancelled out a 4% decrease in turkey at 467.277 million pounds. October’s chicken slaughter and total average light weight were both above the year before, at 818.506 million head and 6.65 pounds per bird, respectively, while the turkey slaughter and average live weights were lower.
US: Approval of Consumption of Chicken Meat Grown in Laboratory
The chicken produced in the laboratory was obtained with live chicken cells. For the first time, the consumption of chicken meat produced in a laboratory is allowed in the United States. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given its approval for the sale of chicken meat made from cell cultures, BBC Türkçe announced. In December 2020, Singapore became the first country to approve the sale of fully lab-grown proteins. Meanwhile, research by Life Cycle projects that lab-grown meat will account for 35% of the global meat market by 2040.
US: Chicken Meat Exports Close the First 9 Months of 2022 With a Reduction
US chicken meat exports remain negative YoY. This also happened in the 2014/2015 crisis, when part of the country was surrounded by outbreaks of Avian Influenza. But now, everything indicates, it is the firm domestic demand that prevents greater exports. Yesterday, for example, in the celebration of Thanksgiving Day, it was chicken that made up for the lack faced in the supply of turkeys. In the first nine months of 2022, the US exported just over 2.432 million tons of chicken meat, a volume 2% lower than that recorded in the same period of 2021. In the last 12 months, total exports remain close, but still short of 3.3 million tons, a result almost 2.5% lower than the same period in the previous year.
US: Why Chicken Prices Are Starting to Drop
Last year, with some meat prices falling, chicken prices remained high. Strong demand, supply issues and even breeding issues with underperforming roosters kept the pressure on. The shortage of supply has caused some restaurants, like Wingstop, to experiment with less popular items like drumsticks. But now conditions are finally improving, paving the way for price declines ahead. Poultry processors were caught off guard by the sudden recovery in demand for food services in 2021 following the massive closures of restaurants in 2020, explained Grady Ferguson, senior research analyst at Gro Intelligence, an agricultural data analytics firm. The decision to cut supply in 2020 has affected batch sizes in 2021, you can't shrink a batch of chickens overnight. Indeed, producers bet in 2020 that demand would still be low in 2021 and anticipated that a lower supply would suffice, he said. With supply and demand more aligned, wholesale prices have been falling in recent months, and supermarket prices are starting to follow suit. It takes some time for the lowest wholesale prices to reach consumers. In part, this is due to long contracts that protect both buyers and sellers from volatility. It's also because sudden price swings in the supermarket would be shocking to consumers, so retailers prefer to continually raise or lower prices rather than sticking to what's happening in the wholesale market.
US: This Year, Bird Flu Has Killed 50.54 Million Birds, the Highest in History
Bird flu has killed 50.54 million poultry (including chickens, turkeys and other birds) in the United States this year, making it the deadliest in U.S. history. The animal health disaster surpassed the previous record of 50.5 million birds killed in 2015. Poultry losses have pushed egg and turkey prices to record highs, fueling inflationary pressures already at multi-decade highs and making spending more expensive for U.S. consumers this Thanksgiving. Europe and the UK are also suffering their worst bird flu crisis, leading some UK supermarkets to ration eggs, limiting the number of eggs customers can buy. This year's bird flu outbreak, which began in February, has so far infected poultry and non-poultry birds in 46 states, according to the U.S.
Hungary: The Poultry Sector Is in Serious Trouble
It is also obvious that not all additional costs can be passed on to consumers, since due to the cost crisis the price of chicken has already risen by 40-45 percent, that of duck has doubled and the price of goose has almost doubled. On the one hand, there are the brutal production costs, while on the other hand, existential fear is at work in people.
Brazil: 70% Of the Chicken Consumed in Qatar Are Brazilian
The World Cup leveraged chicken exports to Qatar in 2022 and, with the visibility of the event, there is an expectation of an increase in tourists and, consequently, a tendency for this commercial relationship to remain promising. With the hosting of the World Cup, the small country of almost three million inhabitants gained worldwide visibility and some curiosities became known, such as those referring to trade relations between Brazil and Qatar. Around 70% of the chicken consumed in Qatar is Brazilian and with the completion of the World Cup, these exports in 2022 took a leap, according to the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA). In the first ten months of the year, in revenue, the increase was 67%, and, in volume, 40%.
Brazil: Brazilian Chicken Meat Exporters Promote the Sector in Doha
In the midst of the World Cup, the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (Abpa), in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), started a campaign to promote chicken meat exports in the main avenues of Doha. In all, 30 panels were spread across the busiest streets in the capital of the country hosting the World Cup.
The revenue obtained from chicken meat exports at the beginning of this month, US$ 458,643,376, represents 83.8% of the amount obtained in November 2021, which was US$ 547,210,374. In the case of volume shipped, the 220,208.981 tons are 72% of the total registered in November last year, amounting to 305,887.615 tons. Revenue per daily average at the beginning of the month was US$ 38,220.281, an amount 32.7% higher than that recorded in November 2021. Compared to the previous week, there was a 7.8% decrease. In the case of tons per daily average, there were 18,350.748, there was an increase of 14% in comparison with the same month of 2021. When compared to the result in the previous week, there is a retraction of 9.2%. The price paid per ton, US$ 2,082,764 at the beginning of the month, is 16.4% higher than that practised in November last year. The result, compared to the value reached in the previous week, represents a slight decrease of 1.5%.
Brazil: Chicken Meat Exports Are Record Even With Slowdown in Chinese Demand
The export volume of chicken meat between January and October this year is the highest ever recorded. According to data from the Ministry of Economy (ME), around 3.92 million tons have already been shipped in the first 10 months of 2022, a volume 4.6% higher than that registered in the same period last year, when exports reached approximately 3.75 million tons. This increase occurs even with a reduction in Chinese demand for the Brazilian product. China reduced its demand for the product by 17.4%, compared to the same period in 2021, as a result of the recovery of domestic animal protein production. “Although China continues to be the main buyer of chicken meat from Brazil, this is a more fragmented market. Thus, the increases in shipments to other important countries, such as the Philippines, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea, Mexico, among others, offset this drop. It is worth remembering that there is a greater world demand for chicken meat, since this is the most accessible protein to the consumer market”, reinforces the Conab market analyst, Wander de Sousa.
On October 31 - November 6, 2022, the purchase price of broiler chickens was PLN 6.01/kg, which was similar to the one obtained a week earlier, but lower by 2% than a month ago. Plants at the turn of October and November this year sold carcasses of gutted chickens at PLN 8.52/kg, which is 16% more expensive than in the previous week and 2% more than a month ago.
Turkey produced 210,077MT of chicken meat in September 2022, an increase of 5.7% YoY but a decrease of 2.7% MoM. In terms of chicken eggs, 1.72B were produced, representing a 6.5% increase YoY and a 2.1% increase MoM. Additionally, 114.79M chickens were slaughtered in September, a 4.5% increase YoY. From January to September 2022, there was a 1.8% increase in the number of chicken eggs produced, a 10.4% increase in chicken meat production, and an 11.8% increase in the number of slaughtered chickens. Despite increased meat production, Turkish producers are struggling to meet high demand from Gulf countries. The surge in demand from Gulf countries is due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, which has caused an increase in grain and energy prices in major egg exporting countries, such as Ukraine and Holland.

Tanzania: Meat Exports Decreased by 24% YoY in October as a Result of the Prolonged Drought
Tanzanian meat exports have been declining due to decreased meat quality caused by the prolonged drought in most parts of the country. Meat exports decreased by around 24% YoY to USD 2.9M in October, from USD 3.8M recorded in the same period of 2021, which also indicates a drop in the volume of meat from 958,015kg to 631,756kg in the same period.

Breeding ducks from the Yilan Branch of the Animal Research Institute were infected with the H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza epidemic. All 5,010 ducks aged 3 to 104 weeks had been culled. Aiming at the reason why they still failed despite high-level epidemic prevention measures, the Animal Research Institute on (21), a review meeting was held in the morning, and the chief secretary, Lin Zongyi, said that it was preliminarily believed that the excrement of infected migratory birds might carry avian influenza virus. With the rainwater entering the duck house through the rusted roof, the breeding ducks were infected with H5N1 avian influenza. The Yilan branch is a research unit, and its biosecurity level is higher than that of other private duck farms. Lin Zongyi said that researchers have to wash twice and change clothes twice when entering the duck farm but still infected with bird flu.

Egg
UK: Shortage of Eggs on Retail Shelves
With costs soaring, many egg farmers have had no choice but to cease production rather than face the risk of losing money on every egg they produce. This, together with the added strain on supply due to the loss of some hens because of avian influenza, has led to the current shortage of eggs on retail shelves. Andrew Joret, Chairman of the British Egg Industry Council, said: "While we expect supply to return to normal once cost pressures ease, we don’t know when this will be, and egg packers and producers continue to lose money. We are doing everything we can to ensure that eggs are on the shelves while the industry works with retailers so that it can get back on its feet as quickly as possible. "Eggs are one of the most nutritious, sustainable foods on the shopping list and they play a crucial role in everyday meals for all the family. It is our absolute priority to ensure that there are enough British eggs for all to enjoy without having to compromise."
Ukraine: Eggs May Become Cheaper by the End of the Year
Some products may become cheaper in Ukraine by the end of 2022. It is about chicken eggs, buckwheat and flour. UKAB (Ukrainian Club of Agrarian Business) analyst Svitlana Lytvyn said that prices for buckwheat and eggs may decrease by the end of the year. These products in 2022 became one of the record-breaking products in terms of price increase. The deficit that arose in these positions during the year led to a significant increase in their prices, the expert added. The Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine has started an investigation into the reasons for the increase in prices for chicken eggs in September-October 2022. As the Committee notes, even taking into account all the severe economic consequences of the war, the rapid increase in prices for chicken eggs (the increase in the cost of eggs in September 2022, compared to June 2022, was about 54%) may not have objective reasons. The Ministry of Agricultural Policy predicts the stabilisation of egg prices in November. The department explained that the increase in prices was influenced by several factors, including seasonality and hostilities, due to which some enterprises stopped or significantly reduced their activities. At the same time, food market experts predict that the price of eggs will stop growing in January 2023, but by that time the prices of the popular product will jump to almost 70 hryvnias per dozen.
