They Denounce the Arrival of Lambs From France to Slaughterhouses in Castilla Y León for the Christmas Campaign

The Union of Unions of Farmers and Ranchers, which is already analysing the situation of the main foods that will be on the table on Christmas Eve in many homes, is confident that, despite the crisis and price increases this year, the quality of the national product and its value enhancement allow the consumption of lamb not to drop notoriously for these dates. The Unión de Uniones, after reviewing consumer and producer prices, warns of a significant increase in the former compared to last year, whose estimates are around 17% comparing prices up to September and without taking into account the great peak that occurs in the price towards the end of the year. This increase is not compensated in the same way for producers who would be receiving only 8.45% more for their product when production costs would have increased by more than 42%. "Lambs are being brought from France to slaughterhouses in Castilla y León and it is important that the consumer can clearly distinguish them from the Spanish ones because the quality is not comparable," the organisation comments. Union of Unions calls for greater control over the labelling of products at the butcher's counter 'not packaged' where the origin of the lamb appears in a visible place, which should not be other than where it has been raised. Unión de Uniones highlights that more and more sheep farms are closing, due to the impact of the coronavirus, with the closure of the HORECA channel for months and the limit on social and family gatherings. The organisation urges the Administration to do everything in its power to stop the closure of more farms, bet on a fair food chain law and implement the relevant aid to reduce the impact of production costs due, largely to the war in Ukraine.
