Romania decides to ban the export of wheat, wheat flour, corn, oats, rice, barley, and sugar to third countries (non-EU) due to Covid-19 outbreak and amid the state of emergency in the country. The ban is said to have come into effect to protect the domestic market and avoid any near-future shortages.
Romania has realized 17% of the total EU soft wheat exports to third countries, 17% of the barley and over 74% of the total corn exports to third countries since the beginning of the 2019/20 season until the 5th of April.
During the same period, Romania has exported 16% of Egypt's total wheat imports.
The export ban from Romania may contribute to global grain and cereal prices to further escalate.
