Among the seven Australian products banned to enter China rock lobster is probably the one most affected. Of the total exports this product had, around 90% were directed to China. Suppliers had to find a plan immediately, and the decision was to mainly focus on the local market.
The major supplier and co-operative from Western Australia has now signed a contract with a supermarket giant to clear shellfish on retail shelves across Australia at the relative bargain price of AUD$20 (or USD$15) each for a cooked lobster.
The coronavirus pandemic and worsening trade crisis with China has seen rock lobster fishers focus on the market closer to home, which will see around 35 tonnes in wholesales and supermarkets in Australia.
