The Department of Huila is the fish farming power in Colombia and continues to grow in tilapia production. The department increased its production of this fish by approximately 5,400 tons by 2021. Tilapia accounts for 58% of the national fish production, followed by other species such as cachama, trout and others. The country went from producing 174,067 tons to 188,658 tons of fish between 2020 and 2021, where Huila contributed 73,048 tons to this figure, mainly in tilapia, which means that Huila contributes 39% of the national fish production. In terms of exports, Huila continues to be the main exporting department of Colombia with about 85%, mainly of tilapia, normally exported whole or filleted, with the main market being the United States.
