The Turkish fishing sector provides direct employment for 600,000 people and indirect employment for 250,000 people. There are 550 species of fish in the seas and 380 in inland waters, whereas 100 species are in commercial fishing. In addition, there are a total of 2,382 establishments that produce fish, 583 of which are in the sea and 1,830 in inland waters. The aquaculture sector, which consisted of only around 50MT and 100 establishments in the 2000s, now produces up to 600,000MT. Türkiye has started to export technology in fish farming and has signed fishing agreements with 23 countries.

Turkish fishery exports amounted to 252,000MT in 2022, and imports 100,000MT. Most of Türkiye's exports include sea bream, sea bass, and Turkish salmon. Imported fish are mostly "feed fish" such as mackerel and sardines used in tuna farming and economically less valuable fish. Two-thirds of the exports are to EU countries. This is mainly because the products are of high quality in Türkiye, and the facilities have excellent physical infrastructure and hygiene conditions.
