According to government statistics, Cameroon’s annual needs for ware potatoes are estimated at 1,000,000 MT. Despite its fertile highlands, the country’s production still ranges between 250 and 400,000 MT. The remaining 600,000 MT is imported in the form of sliced frozen packages and sold at a minimum price of USD 2 per kilo in retail stores. By 2021, the country has legally imported frozen potatoes for close to USD 7,000,000. This figure will continue to grow as government efforts to make quality, high-yield seeds available to farmers are yet to deliver results.
